The last place Chicago Blackhawks disappointed again this season, but this time it was on a bigger stage. The team suffered a 6-2 defeat at the hands of the St. Louis Blues in the much anticipated Winter Classic in Chicago.
The Blackhawks have played the most Winter Classic games in NHL history, but have not won a game in that setting. The team is now 0-5 after the loss to the Blues to close out 2024.
Head coach Anders Sorensen said, “It’s not the product we expect of ourselves. It’s not the standard we expect from ourselves.” He hasn’t been behind the bench all season and the team has picked up their play compared to when Luke Richardson was the head coach to begin the season, but the Blackhawks’ place in the standings hasn’t changed. They still sit 32nd in the league with 26 points in 38 games and a points percentage of .342%.
Sorensen also mentioned losing net front battles at both ends of the ice and that he thought every one of the Blues’ goals started from a point shot.
The game should have been closer, but while this season has been a tough and disappointing one for the Blackhawks, this Original Six team who has gotten lots of spotlight in Winter Classic games needs to find a win or the NHL might slow down on featuring them so often.
