Canada is going home yet again with World Juniors gold.
Dylan Guenther’s goal in overtime lifted the Canadians to a 3-2 win over Czechia in the 2023 gold-medal game. Canada became the first team in 14 years to win back-to-back titles at the tournament.
It was a deja vu moment for Canada. At the 2022 tournament, Canada blew a 2-0 lead in the gold-medal game, but Kent Johnson potted the overtime winner to lift the team to the championships win.

A few months later, the same scenario played out in Halifax. Canada was up 2-0 heading into the final frame, but two goals by Czechia 54 seconds apart tied the game.
Once again, the Canadians prevailed in the extra frame, winning their 20th World Juniors championship.

For Czechia, it marks a bittersweet end to what was a sensational run for the team. The Czechs started their tournament by upsetting Canada to start the preliminary round, and went on to win their group. The silver medal is the country’s first medal since 2005 at the event.

Final: Canada 3, Czechia 2 (OT)
9:31 p.m. — GOAL! Guenther finishes off a 2 on 1 with Roy and Canada wins gold! Back-to-back World Juniors titles for Canada. A fitting end to one of the most competitive tournaments we’ve seen at the World Juniors in quite some time.

9:28 p.m. — Five minutes into OT, it’s been back-and-forth, but no quality chances on either side. A lot of Wright, Bedard, Zellweger and Stankoven to start OT for Canada.
9:23 p.m. — Overtime has begun. Next goal wins gold.
9:09 p.m. — For the gold-medal game, it is continuous 3 on 3 overtime until someone scores. Overtime frames are 20 minutes long. It is the only game at the World Juniors that does not have a shootout.
End of the third period: Canada 2, Czechia 2
9:06 p.m. — Sixty minutes is not enough to determine gold as we are heading to overtime. Czechia scored two goals in a span of 54 seconds to tie the game in the third. For the second consecutive gold-medal game, Canada blew its 2-0 third-period lead.
9:06 p.m. —Czechia had a chance in the last 30 seconds with a loose puck in the crease and Milic down, but Canada was able to swipe it out of trouble.

9:02 p.m. — Less than three minutes to go in regulation, it’s still tied 2-2.
8:55 p.m. — For the second consecutive World Juniors gold-medal game, Canada has blown a 2-0 third-period lead. The team pulled out the win in overtime against Finland at the 2022 tournament.
8:53 p.m. — GOAL! Just 54 seconds after the Kulich goal, Czechia ties the game. Jakub Kos deflects a shot on net, it goes off Del Mastro and by Milic. Czechia has flipped the script here. 2-2 game with 6:36 remaining.

8:49 p.m. — GOAL! Czechia gets on the board, as Jiri Kulich comes through with the goal. The initial shot by Sale rang the post, but Kulich knocked it the rebound. 2-1 Canada leads with 7:30 to go.

8:48 p.m. — Wright is denied on a 2 on 1. The captain elected to shot, but the attempt was blockered away by Suchanek.
8:44 p.m. — Despite being up, Canada is not playing overly conservative. The team is jumping up in the play when necessary and are still getting offensive-zone chances. It’s what people would call playing to win, not to lose. Canada remains up 2-0 with less than 12 minutes to go.
8:38 p.m. — Eduard Sale gets a look in the slot off a rebound for the Czechs, but he sails the shot wide. As expected, Czechia is putting the pressure on Canada early down by two.
8:33 p.m. — The third period is a go. Canada is 20 minutes away from repeating as World Juniors champions.
8:30 p.m. — A reminder that Canada was up 2-0 after two periods in the 2022 World Juniors gold-medal game. Finland came back and scored twice in the third to force overtime before Kent Johnson won it in the extra frame for Canada.
End of the second period: Canada 2, Czechia 0
8:15 p.m. — Canada heads into the final period of the gold-medal game up 2-0. The Canadians dominated the first half of the period and were rewarded with the Wright goal to double its lead. Czechia began to push in the latter part of the period and Canada should be expecting even more in the third period. Shots are in 22-16 in favor of Canada.
8:11 p.m. — Back to 5 on 5 now. No shots on goal for Czechia on the abbreviated power play.
8:10 p.m. — Brabenec comes out of the box and now it’s a shortened power play for Czechia with three minutes left in the period.
8:09 p.m. — I wouldn’t say Bedard has been a non-factor, but Czechia has done an exceptional job of shutting him down in this game. This is the longest he’s been held off the scoresheet at any game in the 2023 tournament.
8:07 p.m. — Canada wipes out the rest of its power play with a too many men call. Not a good penalty to take, with six players clearly on the ice. It will be on 4 on 4 for 32 seconds and then a Czech power play for 1:28.
8:03 p.m. — Canada heads to the power play with 5:49 left in the second, as Jakub Brabenec is called for interference. He kicked Nolan Allen’s stick away from him and you can’t do that. Canada’s first goal came on the man advanatge.
8 p.m. — The Czechs are finally getting pressure and pucks on Milic, but everything has come from the perimeter. It has made things fairly easy for the Canadian goaltender.
7:52 p.m. — Canada remains ahead 2-0 as the game approaches the halfway point in the period.
7:50 p.m. — Czechia is generating nothing offensively. Outside of the first half of the earlier power play, the Czechs don’t have any sustained offensive zone time in this period. It’s constant dump-ins that Canada is retrieving and immediately getting out of its zone.
7:43 p.m. — GOAL! Shane Wright doubles Canada’s lead with a goal on his birthday. Wright cuts the middle and whips a backhand over the shoulder of Suchanek. It’s been chance after chance for Canada early in the second and the team finally gets one by Suchanek. 2-0 with 15:25 left in the period.

7:41 p.m. — What a play by Bedard to send Logan Stankoven in alone on Suchanek. Bedard dove at a rolling puck and swiped it to Stankoven coming into the zone. Stankoven’s shot was denied by Suchanek.
Connor Bedard (@WHLPats) makes the diving pass to set up Logan Stankoven (#TexasHockey) for the scoring chance, but Tomáš Suchánek (@TCAmericans) stands tall.

7:38 p.m. — Canada kills off the Del Mastro penalty. That was not a good power play at all by Czechia, who allowed two shorthanded breakaways to Canada. There is still more than 17 minutes left in the second.
7:38 p.m. — Another shorthanded chance for Canada as this time it’s Ostapchuk with the breakaway. He immediately forces Suchanek to go right to left, but Suchanek makes a sensational toe save. If the Czech goalie is hurt, he’s not showing it.
Zack Ostapchuk (#GoSensGo) goes in alone for the breakaway, but Tomáš Suchánek (@TCAmericans) makes the pad save to keep 🇨🇿 Czechia 🇨🇿 within a goal of tying this.

7:37 p.m. — After going over to the bench, Suchanek is staying in this game. There are still 41 seconds left on the Czechia power play.
7:35 p.m. — Zack Ostapchuk sends Caeden Bankier in alone for a shorthanded chance and Bankier collides with Suchanek as he’s trying to pull the puck between his legs. The puck trickles across the line, but the officials immediately call off the goal for goalie interference. Suchanek is down and appears to be in a ton of pain.
The Canadians think they’ve jumped out to a two-goal lead with a shorthanded Caedan Bankier (#MnWild) tally, but the goal is immediately waved off for goaltender interference.

7:33 p.m. — Czechia has been a lot less trigger-happy on this power play than its first. A lot more passes being made by the Czechs instead of firing off shots left and right.
7:31 p.m. — Just 40 seconds into the frame and Czechia gets a power play. Del Mastro is called for tripping Jiricek. That seemed like a late call form the official.
7:30 p.m. — The second period has begun from Halifax.
End of the first period: Canada 1, Czechia 0
7:10 p.m. — After 20 minutes, Canada leads in the gold-medal game 1-0. It was all Canada for the last half of the period as Czechia was a step slower to every puck and the Canadians were winning seemingly every 1 on 1 battle. But for as much offensive zone time it has had, Canada did not get a ton of shots on Suchanek. The team registered 10 shots on goal in the opening frame. Czechia had just six.
7:08 p.m. — Milic makes a big save with three minutes to go in the period. Martin Rysavy is sent in on a breakaway attempt, but he can’t beat the Canadian goalie.

— TSN (@TSN_Sports) January 6, 2023
7:07 p.m. — Czechia is struggling to get the puck out of its own zone. Canada is getting extended offensive zone time and by the time the Czechs get a breakout chance, they are gassed. It’s been all Canada for the last couple of minutes.
7:04 p.m. — Othmann continues to be a wrecking ball for Canada.

7:02 p.m. — A strong give-and-go by the Czechs sends Kulich in with space on Milic. He goes backhand to forehand, but the Canadian goalie blockers off the shot. That was similar to the move Kulich made on Sweden goalie Carl Lindbom for his semifinal OT winner.
6:59 p.m. — GOAL! In the dying seconds of the power play, Dylan Guenther rips a one-timer off the bar and in. That’s his office right there, every goal he has scored at the tournament has been from the left dot on the power play. With 7:19 left in the first, it’s 1-0 Canada.

6:56 p.m. — After a big hit by Brennan Othmann on David Jiricek, Jiricek drags down Othmann and is called for holding. With 9:09 left in the period, Canada gets its first power play.
6:54 p.m. — We’ve reached the halfway point in the period, still no score.
6:53 p.m. — Gabriel Sztruc comes inches away from opening the scoring for Czechia, but his shot from the slot hits the post. It was Ethan Del Mastro with the turnover at his own blue line that led to the Sztruc chance.
Gabriel Szturc beats the goalie with a laser of a wrist shot, but he can’t beat the post, and this game remains scoreless in the first period.

6:52 p.m. — Connor Bedard fires a shot from the blue line that goes in, but the whistle had already been blown for offsides. Bedard was working the offensive blue line and just barely had brought the puck out of the zone.
Canada almost strikes first but the play was ruled offside.

6:51 p.m. — There have been tons of blocked and tipped shots so far. The game is over eight minutes in yet each team only has one registered shot on goal.
6:44 p.m. — Czechia can’t capitalize on the early man advantage despite multiple shot attempts. The Czechs love shooting, especially from the point. A number of good blocks on that PK by Canada, including a couple by Tyson Hinds.
6:41 p.m. — Just 1:45 into the game, and Nathan Gaucher is called for interference. An early power play for Czechia. Discipline was an issue for Canada in its previous loss to Czechia.
6:38 p.m. — Puck is down and the gold-medal game has begun from Halifax.
Pregame
6:25 p.m. — Lines for both teams. A great goaltender duel with Milic vs. Tomas Suchanek.
It’s Canada. It’s Czechia. It’s the gold medal game at the 2023 World Juniors in the Scotiabank Centre in Halifax. Puck drop is only moments away.

6:15 p.m. — Here is how Canada lines up for the gold-medal game. No changes in the lineup and Thomas Milic should start.

5:55 p.m. — A major factor in the game tonight is going to be the ice. It was an issue in Canada’s semifinal game against Sweden and already was skated on today for the bronze-medal game.
5:30 p.m. — Canada can become the first time in over a decade to win back-to-back gold medals at the World Juniors. Meanwhile, the last time Czechia won gold (2001), no one on its current roster had been born yet.
Canada vs. Czechia start time
- Time: 6:30 p.m. ET (7:30 p.m. AST)
The puck drops at 6:30 p.m. ET (7:30 p.m. local time) from the Scotiabank Centre in Halifax, N.S., the home of the QMJHL’s Halifax Mooseheads.
