While many NHL players who weren’t picked to play in the 4 Nations Face-Off took the break as an opportunity to fly away to kinder weather, Montreal Canadiens’ rookie blueliner Lane Hutson went just a little bit south to Boston.
The youngster went to the Beanpot tournament to cheer on his alma mater along with San Jose Sharks rookie Macklin Celebrini. The two rivals in the Calder Trophy race were teammates at Boston University in the NCAA last season and they did a fantastic job hyping up the BU players in the dressing room.
In front of those two inspiring players, BU was able to win the Beanpot, defeating Jacob Fowler’s Boston College 4-1 in the final. That wasn’t enough for Hutson though, the next day, he put on his gear and practiced with his former teammates.
When the Canadiens return from the break, they’ll have 26 games left to play, 26 games for Hutson to pad up his points total. Chris Chelios has the record for most points in a rookie season by a Canadiens’ defenseman with 64 points. Right now, Hutson has 41 in 56 and is on pace for 60 points, but one has to remember that at the start of the season, he wasn’t getting as much ice time and he wasn’t on the first power play unit either.

The Habs rookie is one point ahead of Celebrini in the rookie scoring race and is one of the front runner for the Calder. So far, it’s a battle between the two BU alumni and Calgary Flames goaltender Dustin Wolf.
