After a disappointing training camp, Joshua Roy failed to crack the Montreal Canadiens lineup at the start of the season and was assigned to the Laval Rocket. The Saint-Georges-de-Beauce native wasn’t pleased about it, but he put on his working boots and got to work.
In 17 games with the Canadiens’ farm team, he picked up eight goals and eight assists, earning himself a recall. He played the last four games with Montreal and not only was he kept off the scoresheet, but he wasn’t all that visible either. He never spent more than 11:30 on the ice through his stay and only put up three shots on goal.

Whether he played with Jake Evans of Kirby Dach, the result was the same, Roy didn’t make much of an impact in those four games. The Canadiens only tasted the win once during his stay, an overtime victory against the Columbus Blue Jackets after an overtime loss to the Utah Hockey Club. This weekend, the Habs dropped two decisions in as many days against the New York Rangers and the Boston Bruins.
While today is a day off for the Canadiens, the team still announced that Roy was loaned to the Rocket. Why? There’s been no official confirmation yet, but given how Patrik Laine has progressed so far, this could be a sign that he is ready to return and make his season debut with the Habs.
Montreal will start a five-game homestand tomorrow with a game against the New York Islanders, followed by a battle with the Nashville Predators on Thursday, a date with the Washington Capitals on Saturday, a tussle with the Anaheim Ducks on Monday and, finally a match against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday week.
It looks like the question is now when will Laine come back this week and no longer whether he will be making his second debut.
