One of the concerning trends that have appeared this season for the Vancouver Canucks is their play in overtime and the shootout. Through 39 games this season, Vancouver has played past regulation 13 times, collecting four wins while falling nine times. With still more than half the campaign to go, the Canucks are on pace for 18 overtime/shootout losses, which would tie the NHL record for most in a single season.

Four teams hold the current NHL record of 18 overtime/shootout losses. They are the 2008-09 Tampa Bay Lightning, the 2011-12 Flordia Panthers, the 2013-14 New Jersey Devils and the 2014-15 Philadelphia Flyers. As for their playoff fates, three of the four teams missed the postseason, with the only exception being the Panthers, who captured their division in 2011-12.
As for franchise history, Vancouver’s 2015-16 team currently holds the record with 13 overtime/shootout losses. That season, the Canucks finished with 75 points, which ranked second last in the Western Conference. Based on the way Vancouver has played this season, it is hard to imagine that this year’s team won’t break at least the franchise record, as they are already tied for eighth most with just over half the season to play.
While losing in overtime or a shootout may not seem like a big issue now, it could have a significant impact on the Canucks quest for a postseason spot. Just look at last year’s Detroit Red Wings, who suffered nine overtime/shootout losses last season. At the end of the season, they finished tied with the Washington Capitals in points but lost the tiebreaker, meaning they missed out on the postseason. While they did have a decent record of 14-9 after regulation, their inability to win one of those nine games that went past regulation was the reason they missed the postseason for an eighth straight season.
With how tight the playoff picture is projected to be, Vancouver can not afford to drop more extra points the rest of the season. They are barely holding onto a Wild Card spot and are seeing the gap between them and the top three in the Pacific Division grow larger day by day. Unless something changes, the Canucks could not only miss the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs but also find themselves in the NHL record book at the end of the season.
