Following a collision that forced him to leave the game against the Boston Bruins on Wednesday, Devils goaltender Jacob Markstrom has reportedly suffered a left knee sprain and “will miss some time,” according to NHL Network’s Kevin Weekes.
Despite the bad news, it appears New Jersey was fearing the worst after Markstrom’s collision with forward Justin Brazeau — which necessitated Markstrom to be helped off the ice — and the severity of the goalie’s injury isn’t as bad as once thought.
Still, the injury is a big blow to the Devils who entered Thursday in third place in the Metropolitan Division with a 27-17-6 record. Much of their success this season has been thanks to Markstrom who is in his first year with New Jersey after getting traded from the Calgary Flames in June of 2024 for a first-round draft pick and defenseman Kevin Bahl.
In 36 games, the 34-year-old and 16-year veteran has held opponents to a career-low 2.20 GAA with a .912 save percentage, his best since 2021-22 (.922). His three shutouts on the year have also helped the Devils rank fifth in goals allowed (126) this season.
In Markstrom’s place, Jake Allen will likely be in net with Nico Daws likely getting promoted from the AHL to serve as the backup. In 15 games, Allen, a fellow long-time veteran, has allowed a 2.66 GAA and has a .904 save percentage in his second season in New Jersey.
