New Jersey Devils goaltender Jacob Markstrom was named the NHL’s third star for the month of December.
He joined Colorado Avalanche’s Nathan MacKinnon (first star) and Leon Draisaitl (second star) from the Edmonton Oilers.
Markstrom earned a record of 8-1-1 with a 1.30 goals-against average and a .937 save percentage through 10 games. He additionally had two shutouts.
The 34-year-old shined in his back-to-back 12-save shutouts against the Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers on Dec. 21 and Dec. 23.
“I told them, 12 is good; that’s right in my pocket,” Markstrom said after his victory over the Rangers. “That fits me perfectly.”
Per NHL PR, “Markstrom’s 139:35 shutout sequence from Dec. 17-27 was the second-longest of his NHL career, behind just a 144:46 run from Oct. 25 – Nov. 2, 2021, with the Calgary Flames.
New Jersey acquired Markstrom from the Flames on June 19, 2024, in exchange for Kevin Bahl and a first-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft. This season, he has a 19-7-2 record with a 2.15 goals-against average, a .912 save percentage, and three shutouts through 28 total appearances.
He ranks second in the NHL in wins, second in goals-against average (minimum: 13 games played), and tied for second in shutouts.
As New Jersey’s number-one goaltender, Markstrom helped the Devils to an 8-4-1 record in December. The team is currently second in the Metropolitan Division with 51 points.
