Former Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Louis Domingue, who is the last netminder to dress in a playoff game for the franchise, is returning to the NHL for the team that eliminated the Penguins that season, the New York Rangers
On Tuesday, the team announced that former Vezina Trophy winner Igor Shesterkin will be headed to IR with an upper-body injury. This is just another blow to a season spiraling out of control at the end of the calendar year.
In his place, Domingue was called up from the Hartford Wolf Pack. Last season, he played one game with the Rangers, picking up a 4-1 win over the Minnesota Wild. It was his first NHL action since leaving the Penguins after their first-round loss, in which he went 3-3 to get the series to Game 7.
This season in the AHL with the Wolf Pack, Domingue is 4-9-2 with a 3.64 GAA and .888 SV%, down from his solid season in 2023-24 when he compiled a 16-8-4 record with .266 GAA and .909 SV%.

As a professional, the 32-year-old netminder has a 98-78-27 record with ten shutouts in the AHL, posting a 2.79 GAA and .907 SV% while skating in 143 NHL games. He’s 60-60-10 with seven NHL teams, collecting a 3.02 GAA and .905 SV%.
Now, with Shesterkin out for an undetermined length, the starting duties fall to three-time Stanley Cup winner Jonathan Quick, with Domingue as the backup.
The Penguins and Rangers will meet again on Feb. 7, the second-to-last contest for Pittsburgh before the break for the 4 Nations Face-off.
