The Calgary Flames are back to work preparing for their next game on Sunday against the San Jose Sharks, kickstarting the final stretch of the 2024-25 regular season.
On Wednesday, the club announced two call-ups: defensemen Yan Kuznetsov and Ilya Solovyov from the Calgary Wranglers. That gave the NHL club a plethora of defenders, not including Rasmus Andersson, who hasn’t returned yet from the 4 Nations Face-off.
However, on Thursday, the Flames gave fans a glimpse of their plans regarding the eight defenders on the active roster by their decision to waive veteran Tyson Barrie.
The 33-year-old has played 13 games with Calgary this season, scoring a goal and two assists for three points and earning a minus-7 rating. Barrie had one goal and two points while skating in two games with the Wranglers.
In 14 NHL seasons, Barrie has played 822 games, scored 110 goals and 508 points, and has a career minus-82 rating.
Meanwhile, Kuznetsov has not played with the Flames this season but has three goals and 14 points in the AHL. Solovyov, on the other hand, played in Calgary’s last game before the 4 Nations Face-off break and is the Wranglers’ second-highest-scoring defender with six goals and 21 points in 43 games.
The Flames’ defensive unit may also see another addition before the weekend. Kevin Bahl continues to skate in practice after recovering from an upper-body injury sustained in January.
