On Tuesday, the Boston Bruins relieved head coach Jim Montgomery of his duties, and a former New York Islanders player took over behind the bench.
Joe Sacco, who spent two seasons with New York, will assume the role of Boston’s interim head coach.
Sacco joined the team in a trade with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim on Feb. 5, 1998.
The Islanders dealt Travis Green, Doug Houda, and Tony Tuzzolino to Anaheim in exchange for Sacco, Mark Janssens, and Jean-Jacques Daigneault.
Sacco played 98 games across two years with the team, scoring six goals and three assists for nine points. Following the 1998-99 season, he left for the Washington Capitals.
Following his playing days, he’s served as head coach of the Colorado Avalanche and as an assistant for the Buffalo Sabres and Bruins. He will also be the second former Islander to assume interim coaching duties in as many seasons.
Ironically, Green served as the New Jersey Devils’ interim head coach last season before hiring Sheldon Keefe this past summer.
Sacco will make his Bruins head coaching debut on Thursday against the Utah Hockey Club.
