As a free agent this past summer, Sprong signed with the Canucks after spending last season with the Detroit Red Wings, where he scored 18 goals and 43 points, the second-best totals of his career.
The 27-year-old from the Netherlands is headed back to Seattle, where he recorded his best NHL season with 21 goals and 46 points in 2022-23. The Kraken didn’t offer him a contract in July 2023, so he ended up with the Red Wings.
Initially drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round (46th overall) at the 2015 Draft, Sprong is a veteran of 353 games with 86 goals and 162 points.
Interestingly, Sprong has been traded three times, all for Swedish-born players, including Marcus Pettersson, Christian Djoos, and Marcus Johansson.
In addition to his stops in Pittsburgh, Detroit, and Seattle, he skated with the Washington Capitals and Anaheim Ducks.
