Matthew Knies wasted no time making a statement on Wednesday night.
Just four seconds into the Toronto Maple Leafs’ game against the Vegas Golden Knights, Knies dropped the gloves with Zach Whitecloud in a fight that stemmed from a controversial hit in November. The fight may have sent a message, but it failed to rally the Leafs, who fell 5-2 in a lopsided loss.
Wednesday marked the first meeting between the two teams since the incident, and Knies didn’t hesitate to settle the score. In just his second career fight, the 22-year-old forward threw a series of heavy left-handed punches before both players hit the ice.
The history between Knies and Whitecloud dates back to November 20, when Knies took a high hit from the Golden Knights defenseman. His head hit the ice, forcing him to miss two games with an upper-body injury. The NHL Department of Player Safety did not issue any disciplinary action, ruling that Whitecloud took a “good angle of approach.”

After the game, head coach Craig Berube praised Knies for standing up for himself.
“I think going back to that hit, he wanted some redemption,” said Berube. “I give him a lot of credit to do that and get it out of the way early and then go play hockey.”
Teammate Mitch Marner was the only post-game speaker to mention that Knies had brought it up to the team before puck drop, hinting that he was looking for the fight.
“He told us he was going to see if he could get that, obviously with the hit that happened the last time that we played them,” Marner explained. “He kind of gave us the heads up, so we didn’t know if it was going to happen or not. Great fight by Kniesy.”
The exchange was one of the only moments in the game that the Leafs showed much fight, with assistant captain John Tavares admitting the club failed to build off his energy in the remaining 59:56 of the game.
“I mean, (Knies) steps up there big time. It sets the tone right off the bat. So, it was disappointing we didn’t match it after that,” said Tavares.
Knies’ only other fight came on December 16, 2023, when the forward stepped up to defend teammate Max Domi – engaging in a scuffle with John Ludvig in a 7-0 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins.
“Yeah, that’s great. I mean, that’s maturity by him,” said captain Auston Matthews. “Nod to both guys for obviously engaging in that, but I mean, he’s (Knies) a big boy. So it’s good to see that. And obviously, hoping to get a little bit more energy from our bench and a little more life from that. That wasn’t the case, but great job by him.”
“I thought it was great. Obviously, a great player and an important piece to what we’re doing and a young guy making a statement like that I thought was powerful,” added defenseman Morgan Rielly.
While the brawl may not have changed the outcome of the game, it sent a clear message that Knies isn’t afraid to stand his ground or fight his own battles, and it’s not something he’ll quickly forget.
