The Jakob Chychrun saga in Arizona has reached its conclusion.
The Coyotes on Wednesday traded the defensemen to the Senators in exchange for three draft picks, ending Chychrun’s seven-year run with the franchise.
Chychrun’s name was been in trade rumors for over two years, ever since he broke out during the 2020-21 season. With Arizona in a rebuild and Chychrun on an extremely team-friendly deal, he made for a top trade chip for Coyotes general manager Bill Armstrong.

Armstrong finally pulled off a move after failing to move Chychrun at last year’s trade deadline or the 2022 offseason.
The 2016 firstt-round pick skated in 36 games for the Coyotes this season before the team elected to hold him out of game action in anticipation of a trade. He posted seven goals, 21 assists and 28 points while averaging a career-high 23:16 time on ice. He also contributed 56 blocked shots and 43 hits.

According to TSN’s Pierre LeBrun, the Coyotes had been asking for Ridly Greig and more top prospects to be involved in the deal, but they lowered their asking price after the Senators said no.
Talks heated up in last 48 hours between Ott/Ariz once the ask softened. Originally, Coyotes were asking about likes of Ridly Greig and other top prospects to be part of the deal. Sens said they couldn’t do that, so were out of it. But Ariz re-engaged this week and price softened

The Senators entered Wednesday’s play sixth in the Atlantic Division with 64 points and have a long way to go toward playoff contention, but they have turned their season around after a slow start. Ottawa began the year 6-12-1 but have gone 24-14-3 since. They head into a Thursday showdown with the Rangers riding a three-game winning streak. They trail the Penguins by five points for the second wild card in the Eastern Conference.

Senators draft pick protection
The 2023 first-round pick is protected if it ends up being in the top five. If that happens, then the Coyotes would receive an unprotected 2024 first-round pick.
The 2024 second-round pick could become a 2024 first-round, top-10-protected pick if Ottawa reaches the Eastern Conference finals in 2023.
Conditions: The ’23 1st-round pick is top-5 protected. If met, pick becomes ’24 1st-round unprotected. Additionally, should #Sens reach ’23 ECF, the 2nd-round pick becomes ’24 1st-round top 10-protected. If that condition is met, the pick becomes ’25 1st-round unprotected. 2/2
