The Winnipeg Jets have now lost three consecutive games, losing 3-2 to the New York Islanders to kick off their four-game road trip.
The Islanders started the scoring in the first period thanks to Kyle Palmieri’s 20th goal of the season. The 34-year-old could be playing one of his final games as an Islander as he’s expected to be moved by the deadline on Friday.
Another player who’s increasingly likely to be moved at the deadline extended the Islanders’ lead with his 20th goal of the season. Brock Nelson, a possible trade candidate for the Jets, made it 2-0 early in the second period.
The Jets’ power play finally came alive with Josh Morrissey picking up his ninth goal of the season.
The Islanders once again scored within the first five minutes of the period, this time off of the stick of stay-at-home defenseman Ryan Pulock. The Jets would answer back on the power play, this time by Nikolaj Ehlers. The 29-year-old winger is now up to 19 goals on the season.
The Islanders were able to stymie the Jets’ push for an equalizer, limiting them to just five shots in the third period to hold onto the 3-2 lead. Ilya Sorokin, who started both games of a back-to-back, turned away 26 of the 28 shots he faced. Connor Hellebuyck denied 26 of the 29 shots he encountered.
The Jets are back in action on Thursday when they travel to take on the Philadelphia Flyers. Winnipeg will be looking for revenge after they lost in a shootout over the weekend.
