One year ago today, the Vancouver Canucks decided to push their chips into the middle to grab Elias Lindholm from the Calgary Flames. He would later go on to sign a seven-year deal of $7.75M AAV with the Boston Bruins in free-agency. Let’s take a look at where all the pieces of this puzzle are one year after the trade went down.
Elias Lindholm
In 26 regular season games with the Canucks, Lindholm put up six goals and six assists, eventually finding his way onto a line with Conor Garland and Dakota Joshua. The playoffs are where he and his line exploded, with Lindholm racking up five goals and five assists in 13 games. Despite his campaign with Vancouver being hampered by a wrist injury, he was still signed to a long-term deal by the Bruins in free-agency. Since then, he has scored nine goals and 18 assists in 53 games played with Boston. Bruins fans haven’t been too happy about this, as they expected more production from him for the amount that they were paying him. However, there hasn’t been much offensive production in Boston at all, as the team as a whole is 21st in the NHL in total goals scored, so it’s not exactly Lindholm’s fault.
Andrei Kuzmenko
A former Canucks fan-favourite, Andrei Kuzmenko first came to Vancouver as a free agent in 2022. The forward impressed in his debut season with 39 goals and 35 assists, but has since cooled down. He posted eight goals and 13 assists in 43 games with the Canucks before being traded to the Flames last season. In a new environment, he scored 14 goals and 11 assists in 29 games with Calgary before the end of the 2023–24 regular season. However, it appears the defensive woes Vancouver had regarding his play have come to the forefront once again. On Thursday night, he was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers alongside Jakob Pelletier and two picks in exchange for Joel Farabee and Morgan Frost. Kuzmenko scored four goals in 37 games played with the Flames this season.

Hunter Brzustewicz
Hunter Brzustewicz made a name for himself when he put up 13 goals and 79 assists in 67 games with the Kitchener Rangers of the OHL last season. This followed a respectable 57-point campaign the year before. The 75th overall pick of the 2023 NHL Draft, Brzustewicz was one of two defensive prospects traded to the Flames from Vancouver. Nearly two months after he was acquired, Calgary signed Brzustewicz to his entry-level contract — a three-year, $950,000 AAV deal. This season, Brzustewicz joined Calgary’s AHL affiliate, the Calgary Wranglers, and has played in 42 games so far. His three goals and 12 assists have him as the fourth-highest scoring defenceman on his team.
Joni Jurmo
Joni Jurmo was picked in the third round, 82nd overall, by the Canucks in the 2020 NHL Draft. During his time in the Canucks organization, he played for Team Finland in the 2022 World Juniors, tallying one assist in seven games played. Last season, he split time between Ilves and KooKoo of Liiga, registering five total points in the 46 games played with both clubs. He has since joined Calgary’s organization, playing nine games each with the Wranglers and the Rapid City Rush of the ECHL. While he has yet to score a point as a member of the Wranglers, he has posted two goals and five assists with the Rush.
2024 1st Round Pick — Matvei Gridin
Vancouver’s 2024 1st round pick, 28th overall, was used to select forward Matvei Gridin of the USHL’s Muksegon Lumberjacks. In the 2023–24 regular season, he potted 38 goals and 45 assists in 60 games, as well as five points in eight playoff games. The 2024–25 season marks his first in the QMJHL, where he plays as a member of the Shawinigan Cataractes. In 42 games, he has put up 25 goals and 30 assists.
2024 4th Round Pick — Heikki Ruohonen (PHI)
The conditional 4th round pick that was part of the Lindholm trade would have turned into a third-round pick if Vancouver had made it to the Western Conference finals. However, a loss to the Edmonton Oilers in game 7 negated the possibility of this. Calgary later traded this pick to the Flyers in exchange for a 2024 5th round pick and a 2025 6th round pick. The Flyers used this to select Heikki Ruohonen, a centre who currently plays for the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the USHL. He has seven goals and nine assists in 24 games played, and joined Team Finland in the 2025 World Juniors with a four-assist campaign.
