Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas is working the phones ferociously ahead of the 2023 NHL trade deadline.
Less than an hour after Dubas facilitated a Rasmus Sandin trade to the Capitals, the Maple Leafs traded for defenseman Luke Schenn from the Canucks.
Schenn, 33, was a name that was popular in trade rumors leading up to the deadline. The pending UFA returns to Toronto for his second stint with the team after beginning his NHL career with the Maple Leafs in 2008.
He skated in 55 games with the Canucks this year. His 21 points are one shy of tying his career-high of 22, which he set in 2010-11 when he was a member of the Maple Leafs.
Schenn’s 258 hits rank first in the league, and he has added 81 blocked shots while averaging 17:11 minutes per game.

Luke Schenn trade details
- Maple Leafs receive: D Luke Schenn
- Canucks receive: 2023 3rd-round pick
Schenn gives the Maple Leafs yet another option on the blue line. As a right-handed shot, he gives the team depth on the right side, which is by far Toronto’s weaker side on defense.
He hits a ton and he can block shots. Schenn should slide in nicely in a third-pair role, but that is if he gets the opportunity. With the addition of Schenn, head coach Sheldon Keefe has nine defensemen on his roster that have the ability to be everyday NHL players.
The cost for the Leafs was a third-round pick. It leaves Toronto with just their own fifth- and sixth-round selections in 2023, in addition to Boston’s first-round pick that the team acquired in the Sandin deal.
Luke Schenn contract details
Schenn is in the final year of his two-year, $1.7 million contract he signed with the Canucks in 2021. He has a cap hit of $850,000 for this season.
He is set to be an unrestricted free agent this offseason.
