The NHL fined the Dallas Stars $100,000 for an informal skate on Dec. 26.
On Dec. 27, Stars coach Peter DeBoer told reporters they held an optional practice the day before in a comment about his young players. DeBoer also said in his comments that young players are supposed to attend optional practices, according to Robert Tiffin of starsthoughts.com.
While DeBoer reportedly clarified the practice was voluntary ice, it still violated the collective bargaining agreement between the NHL and NHLPA.
December 24, 25 and 26 are off-days for all purposes, according to article 16.5b of the CBA. No team can request a player’s consent to practice on those days for any reason, and no club can travel, either, and providing ice is reportedly a violation as well.
The Toronto Maple Leafs received a $100,000 fine for travelling on Boxing Day in 2022, violating the same section of the CBA. In both cases, the fine money goes to the NHL Foundation.
Despite the ice time, the Stars lost 3-2 in overtime to the Minnesota Wild on Dec. 27 before beating the Chicago Blackhawks 5-1 on Sunday.
