For the first time in NHL history, an outdoor hockey game will be played in the Carolinas.
The Hurricanes are hosting the Capitals tonight in the 2023 Stadium Series. It is the first time that Carolina is being featured in the Stadium Series and the second time for Washington.
Established in 2014, the Stadium Series has allowed small-market teams, like the Hurricanes, to participate in outdoor contests. Carolina was supposed to host the Stadium Series in 2021, however, it was not scheduled that season due to COVID-19 and instead pushed to 2023.
While there used to be multiple Stadium Series events throughout the calendar, Saturday night’s contest is the lone game for 2023.
