The Pittsburgh Penguins announced goaltender Tristan Jarry is going on NHL waivers.
The goaltender is in the second year of a five-year contract with the Penguins, earning $5.375 million per season. Jarry has the 11th-highest cap hit among active goalies this season, according to PuckPedia.
If no teams put in a claim for the 29-year-old, he will be sent down to the AHL’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. It wouldn’t be the first time this season that he featured in the minors.

Earlier this season, Jarry was sent down for a conditioning stint. He played five games for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, recording four wins and one loss. In those five outings, he put up a 2.16 goals-against average and a .926 save percentage.
Before that stint, he played for the AHL Penguins for parts of four seasons between 2015-16 and 2018-19. He never dropped below a .900 SP.
This season in the NHL has been the worst of Jarry’s career thus far. In 22 games, he is 8-8-4 with a 3.31 GAA and a .886 SP.
Among goalies who have played at least 20 games this season, Jarry is only behind Philipp Grubauer of the Seattle Kraken and Alexandar Georgiev of the San Jose Sharks in GAA and SP. Those numbers are not ideal for the Penguins, who are looking to push for a wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.
Now, Pittsburgh will look to Alex Nedeljkovic and potentially Joel Blomqvist. In 19 games this season, Nedeljkovic has put up similar numbers to Jarry.
As for Blomqvist, he’s put up a .904 SP in eight NHL games. His last start for Pittsburgh was on Nov. 8 in a 4-2 win over the Washington Capitals. He stopped 32 out of 34 shots, ending the night with a .941 SP.
