Players The Canucks Could Trade For Based On Name Alone

With the 2025 trade deadline just a few weeks away, one team to keep an eye on is the Vancouver Canucks. While GM Patrik Allvin has already made some significant moves, the Canucks are still involved in plenty of trade rumours ahead of the March 7 deadline. Overall, it should be an intriguing few weeks as Vancouver’s management group tries to improve their roster ahead of the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

This season, the Canucks have become famous for bringing in players with similar names. Some examples include the three Pettersson, as well as multiple players within the organization whose first name is Ty. With this in mind, here is a look at some players Vancouver could target based strictly on their first or last name.

*Note: These are not trade rumours. All proposed players are based on first or last name. In order for a player to qualify, their rights must be owned by an NHL team. 

Why Not Add More Petterssons

As mentioned, the Canucks currently have three Pettersson’s on their roster, so why not add more. While they don’t play in the NHL yet, there are two other Pettersson’s whose rights are owned by teams. Both are also under 22 years old, have won medals for Sweden at the U18s and were selected in the top 75 during their respective drafts.

Starting with the older Pettersson, that would be Oskar Pettersson, who currently plays for the Belleville Senators of the AHL. The 21-year-old right winger was selected 72nd overall by the Ottawa Senators in 2022 and has already played 70 games in the AHL. Pettersson also has some built-in familiarity with Vancouver, as he played with Jonathan Lekkerimäki, defenceman Elias Pettersson and Tom Willander at the 2024 World Juniors.

As for the younger Pettersson, his name is Lucas Pettersson, and he is currently playing with Östersunds IK in the HockeyAllsvenskan. The 19-year-old center was drafted by the Anaheim Ducks 35th overall in 2024 and has represented Sweden at multiple tournaments over his career. As for his connection to the Canucks, Pettersson spent his junior career with MoDo Hockey, which is where Daniel and Henrik Sedin, as well as Markus Näslund, played before making the jump to the NHL.

The More Myers, The Better

What’s better than one tall right-shot defender with the last name Myers? Two tall right-shot defenders with the last name Myers. Yes, despite not being related, there are two right-shot defenders in the NHL with the last name Myers.

The player in question is Philippe Myers, who currently plays for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Listed at 6’5″, 219 lbs, Myers would be tied for the second-tallest player on the team while having the second-highest weight on Vancouver, with only Tyler Myers outranking him in both categories. Based on the Canucks history of bringing in tall and physical defenders, Myers actually fits the type of player profile Vancouver’s management has been keen on adding over the past few seasons.

A Different Version Of Hughes

At first glance, most people would think this headline is related to Quinn Hughes’ brothers. While it would be incredible to watch Quinn, Jack, and Luke Hughes play for the Canucks, a trade of this scale would be something rarely seen in the NHL. That being said, Vancouver could still bring in a Jack Hughes, who, coincidentally enough, also plays center.

The Jack Hughes in question is the 21-year-old L.A. Kings draft pick currently playing at Boston University. Drafted 51st overall in 2022, Hughes is connected to the organization as he is currently playing with both Willander and Aiden Celebrini in the NCAA. The son of current Montréal Canadiens GM Kent Hughes, adding Jack would allow the Canucks to have Pettersson and Hughes at center as well as on the blue line.
