The Calgary Flames have been a revolving door since winning the Pacific Division and losing to the archrival Edmonton Oilers in 2022, with veterans Elias Lindholm, Chris Tanev, Nikita Zadorov, Jacob Markstrom, Matthew Tkachuk, Tyler Toffoli, Andrew Mangiapane, Noah Hanifin and the late Johnny Gaudreau leaving via free agency or being traded before doing so.
The Flames rebuild under GM Craig Conroy was thought to have the club a few years away from being competitive, but they are holding onto the last Western Conference wild-card spot with a 25-19-7 record. Conroy appears to have bought into his squad’s chances of making the post-season, as Calgary dealt with Philadelphia for center Morgan Frost and winger Joel Farabee on Thursday and spread the word that the Flames will not be sellers this time around.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman indicated on HNIC’s Saturday Headlines that the Flames are not open to trading defensemen Rasmus Andersson, MacKenzie Weegar and center Nazem Kadri before the March 7 NHL trade deadline.
Unlike last season, when the Flames were under the gun to move Zadorov, Tanev and Lindholm before becoming unrestricted free agents, the current trio all have years remaining on their current deals, but that has not stopped rival GMs from inquiring as the market for centers and top-four defensemen is particularly brisk.
Kadri is in the third year of a seven-year, $49 million deal and is second in team scoring with 35 points. Weegar, who was acquired in the 2022 deal that sent Matthew Tkachuk to Florida is in year two of an eight-year deal, is right-handed and locked for a friendly $6.25 million cap hit.
Andersson has a year remaining at a cap hit of $4.55 million, but Friedman said that the Flames are confident that the club can get the 28-year-old extended when he becomes eligible for a new contract in July.
