The Buffalo Sabres begins a lengthy four-game road swing in Philadelphia against the Flyers on Saturday night without their starting goalie, their leading scorer, and one of the best two-way forwards.
Goalie Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen practiced fully for the first time on Friday after suffering an undisclosed lower-body injury prior to the 7-5 loss to Montreal on Monday. While he indicated that he could be available for the Flyers game, Buffalo is playing it safe but with four days until their next game in Los Angeles.
“We have a pretty tight schedule coming up, and feel like we’re just trying to be smart with (the injury) now,” Luukkonen said. “I’ve been able to practice with it. I feel good now.”

The club is using the same approach with Thompson, who was injured against the Canadiens and did not participate in practices or morning skates until Saturday. Buffalo’s caution with both players is justified since a lengthy absence from either would put the club in an unenviable position.
Jordan Greenway left practice on Friday with what was described as a “nagging ailment” and Ruff indicated that the big winger will not play against the Flyers. Forward Jiri Kulich was recalled from AHL Rochester. The 20-year-old was demoted by the Sabres on November 5 and scored three points (2 goals, 1 assist) in four games.
Devon Levi will make his sixth start of the season against the Flyers after a shaky 24-save performance in a 4-3 overtime win against St. Louis on Thursday.
