Macklin Celebrini scored both goals for the San Jose Sharks against the Minnesota Wild last night, and did so against future Hall of Famer Marc-Andre Fleury.
Celebrini’s first goal was a tap in, but his second goal was a no-look snipe that beat Fleury over the glove.
When the 2024 No. 1 pick scored his first goal, he became just the fourth player in the last ten years to score a goal on a goalie at least 21 years older than him. Per the NHL, The other players to achieve this feat are: Kent Johnson (vs. Craig Anderson on Feb. 28, 2023), Aaron Ekblad (vs. Martin Brodeur on Dec. 8, 2014) and Filip Forsberg (vs. Martin Brodeur on Dec. 4, 2014).
“He’s been in the league longer than I’ve been alive, I think so It’s been amazing to watch his career,” Celebrini said about Fleury postgame. “The runs he had with with Pittsburgh and Vegas, and even him in Chicago and now Minnesota, he seems like a great personality. It has been fun to watch his off ice antics as much as his on ice [play].”
Fleury had some high praise for Celebrini as well.
“He’s a good player. He’s got good awareness where guys are at. He’s got a good shot,” Fleury said. “That last goal I wish I could get back. I’ll be looking forward to watch him.
“Youngest ever to score on me? Yeah good for him,” Fleury smiled.
The youngest player in the NHL, Macklin Celebrini (only 2006-born player), just scored on the oldest player in the NHL, Marc-Andre Fleury (only 1984-born player). 🤯 https://t.co/vOn1gc3aCr
