The 2023 World Juniors bronze-medal game had it all. A total of 15 goals scored, multiple lead changes and tons of sloppy defensive play.
But at the end of it all, the United States walked away with a bronze medal, defeating Sweden 8-7 in overtime of a wild bronze-medal game in Halifax.
Chaz Lucius was the hero for the USA, as he completed his hat trick in the extra frame to get the USA back on the podium. It is the seventh bronze medal the country has won at the event.

After a low-energy first period that saw the USA grab a 1-0 lead, the Americans and Swedes totaled nine goals in the middle frame. The United States blew leads of 2-0, 3-1 and 5-3 in the period, as the two clubs threw defense and structure aside for offense. The teams went into the third tied at 5-5.
Sweden and the USA each scored once in the early goings of the third. Tied at 6-6 with under two minutes to go, Cutter Gauther was credited with a goal with 1:37 remaining in regulation to pull the USA ahead.
However, Sweden did not go down easily. The team pulled its goalie and Filip Bystedt tied the contest yet again with 22 seconds left, forcing the extra time.
But the Swedish comeback was all for naught, as Lucius scored the game-winner just over two minutes into OT.
In total, 11 American players got on the score sheet, with seven recording multi-point efforts in the win. Sweden had 13 skaters record at least one point, with four registering at least two points.

5:09 p.m. — Overtime has begun. Next goal wins the bronze.
End of the third period: USA 7, Sweden 7
5:07 p.m. — What a game. After the USA takes a late lead, Sweden ties it with the goalie pulled. To overtime we go.
5:04 p.m. — GOAL! Tie game yet again! Bystedt puts home a puck in the crease with 21 seconds left to knot things yet again. After Sweden gave up a late game-tying goal to Czechia in the semis, it does it to the USA in the bronze-medal game.

5:03 p.m. — Lindbom to the bench. Sweden has its extra attacker out.
5:02 p.m. — Good goal. The USA has the lead with 1:37 left in the bronze-medal game. It is credited to Gauthier.
5 p.m. — GOAL! McGroarty jams home a loose puck in the crease and with 1:37 to go, the USA takes a 7-6 lead. The puck just barely crossed over the line before Lindbom pulled it out, but it completely crossed over. Sweden is going to challenge for goalie interference.

4:57 p.m. — And here we go. The USA gets a power play with just over two minutes left as Carlsson trips Cooley. Remember that Sweden took a late penalty in its quarterfinal matchup against Finland, but Victor Stjernborg scored a shorthanded goal to break the tie.
4:55 p.m. — Now the USA responds with its best shifts of the period. Hughes has been noticeably better in this period than he was earlier. There’s under three minutes to go in the tied contest.
4:51 p.m. — Sweden has been by far the better team in this third, outshooting the Americans 14-6 in the third. The USA just does not have the legs like the team has shown throughout the tournament, but it is still in the game.
4:45 p.m. — Credit to Mbereko for being thrown into a tough situation while cold, but he needs to be better with his rebound control. A couple of shots that he has saved has resulted in pretty juicy second-chance opportunities for the Swedes.
4:41 p.m. — Hughes sends a message to his bench after the game-tying goal.

4:40 p.m. — GOAL! My word, what an individual effort by Hughes to tie the game. He tried to spin around Adam Engstrom with the puck, got knocked down, but as he was on his knees, he fired a shot along the ice and it beat Lindbom. We’re back to a tied game with 11:43 left.

4:26 p.m. — Augustine’s day is done. Kaidan Mbereko takes over in the crease for the USA. Augustine allowed five goals on 20 shots.
End of the second period: USA 5, Sweden 5
4:09 p.m. — What a period. Nine combined goals between the USA and Sweden and at the end of it, it’s a 5-5 tie. There was absolutely no structure or defense in those 20 minutes on either side, resulting in goals galore in the frame.
4:07 p.m. — GOAL! Just 30 seconds after the Oscarson goal, Ohgren ties the game up. Augustine comes out to play the puck, but his pass goes right to Ohgren and he fires it into the empty net. 5-5 with 42 seconds left in the second. This period has been chaotic from start to finish.

4:06 p.m. — GOAL! Sweden’s power play comes through with a goal by Milton Oscarson to cut it to a 5-4 game. Augustine made the first save on Oscarson attempt, but the puck rolled through his legs and Oscarson knocked in the loose puck. A one-goal game with about a minute left in the second.

4:04 p.m. — Ukfo hip checks Stromgren chasing a dump-in, but it was a second too late and he’s called for interference. Sweden gets a late power play chance to make it a one-goal game.
4:02 p.m. — Lucius spins and fires a shot on net from the dot and Sam Lipkin somehow could not put it in with Lindbom out of position. The puck rolled through the crease from one side and out the other.
3:58 p.m. — GOAL! Lucius rushes in and uses his quick release to beat Lindbom by the blocker. The USA regain a two-goal lead with its fourth goal of the second period. Defense has been highly optional on both sides in this period.

3:52 p.m. — GOAL! The USA retakes the lead as Cutter Gauthier unleashes a bomb over the shoulder of Lindbom on the power play. The Americans have been trying to get Gauthier the one-timer on the right side and he mad no mistake on that one. USA leads 4-3 with under 10 minutes to go.

3:47 p.m. — GOAL! Leo Carlsson ties the game as he rips a one-timer by Augustine. Ufko whiffs on a breakout pass coming out from behind his net and it goes right to Sweden. Seconds later, it’s in the back of the USA net. 3-3 now with 11:08 remaining in the second.

3:41 p.m. — GOAL! Right after the Augustine save at one end, Chaz Lucius takes a Sweden neutral zone turnover, gets in alone on Lindbom and beats him up over the glove. Jackson Blake was the one to poke the puck away and cause the turnover. USA takes a 3-1 lead.

3:41 p.m. — Sweden with a chance to tie the game as Liam Ohgren accelerates for a breakaway, but Augustine makes a pad save.
3:39 p.m. — GOAL! The Swedes answer about a minute and a half after the Ufko goal, as Bystedt beats Augustine under the glove. A drop pass from Lekkerimaki allowed Bystedt to have time and space in the slot. 2-1 USA now less than four minutes into the second.

End of the first period: USA 1, Sweden 0
3:13 p.m. — Cooley’s tally in the opening minutes is the only goal of the period and the USA take a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. Both Lindbom and Augustine have been strong in the nets, as expected. The Americans begin the second on the power play as the Bystedt penalty carries over.
3:14 p.m. — Two big stops by Augustine in the dying moments of the period to keep the SUA shutout intact. Filip Bystedt and Sean Behrens get into a shoving match, but Bystedt’s stick hits Behrens in the face and the USA get a power play.
The Swedes pressed late in the first period for the tie, but Trey Augustine (#2023NHLDraft) shut the door with a series of massive saves to hold 🇺🇸 Team USA’s 🇺🇸 one-goal lead going into the intermission.

3:12 p.m. — Another power play successfully killed off by Sweden. Lindbom has been solid so far in net for the Swedes, making a couple stops on the man advantage.
3:08 p.m. — Noah Ostlund takes down Jackson Blake as the two were pursuing the puck and the Swedish forward sits for interference. A late power play in the period for the USA.
3:05 p.m. — A strong kill from the USA. A couple of good saves from Augustine where he did not allow second-chance opportunities for the Swedes.
3:01 p.m. — Cooley now heads to the box for holding as he dragged down Jonathan Lekkerimaki on the back check. Sweden gets its first power play of the game.
3:01 p.m. — The USA can’t capitalize on the five-minute power play. It didn’t help that two of those minutes was 4 on 4 thanks to the Brindley penalty, but Sweden also had a strong PK.
2:58 p.m. — Luke Hughes comes close to doubling the USA lead, but his shot from far out rings the post.
2:57 p.m. — Brindley is out, so the USA resumes its power play with just under three minutes remaining on the major.
2:54 p.m. — Immediately Gavin Brindley is called for holding so they’ll go to 4 on 4.
2:53 p.m. — A five-minute major and a match penalty assessed to Lysell. The right call as he hit Connors right in the jaw. An extended power-play for the USA.

2:42 p.m. — GOAL! The USA get on the board first as Jimmy Snuggerud sets up Logan Cooley in front. Snuggerud gets the puck on the forecheck and finds Cooley in front. That’s Cooley’s seventh goal of the tournament. 1-0 USA just 2:51 into the contest.
