The New Jersey Devils’ third-period comeback against the Anaheim Ducks fell short, losing 3-2. It marked their second consecutive regulation loss to close out the 2024 calendar year.
Troy Terry, Robby Fabbri, and Ryan Strome scored for Anaheim, while their goaltender, Lukas Dostal, made 32 saves on 34 shots.
In the final frame, New Jersey received goals from Jonas Siegenthaler and Timo Meier.
The Devils surrendered the game’s opening goal 11 minutes into the first period. Ducks forward Terry scored on his team’s first shot on goaltender Jacob Markstrom.
A strong forecheck from Frank Vatrano led to the puck landing on the stick of Ryan Strome, who quickly got it to Terry for his 11th goal of the season.
The Devils dominated the first period, outshooting their opponent 15-5, but entered the first intermission down 1-0.
After a goalless second period, the Ducks extended their lead to 2-0 early in the final frame with a goal by Fabbri.
Less than two minutes later, Siegenthaler scored his second goal of the season. The 27-year-old’s wrist shot from the blue line cleanly beat Dostal. It was his 10th career goal.
Meier, Siegenthaler’s Swiss countryman, tied the game with less than seven minutes remaining. Dougie Hamilton skated the puck into the offensive zone and slid it to the winger, who scored the game-tying goal.
It was Meier’s 16th goal against the Ducks, the most scored against any league opponent. He has 30 career points in 32 games against Anaheim.
Strome scored the game-winning goal with 3:25 remaining. After 60 minutes, Markstrom made 23 saves on 26 shots.
“We didn’t play with any real purpose or structure,” head coach Sheldon Keefe said. “[…] I thought we had a little bit of a pushback in the third in terms of our work ethic, winning some pucks, and staying on offense a little more. But the chances we gave up were completely egregious. You have no chance to win in the NHL playing like that. It was disgraceful.”
The Devils will be back in action Wednesday evening when they visit the Los Angeles Kings at 6:00 P.M. EST.
