Tick tock, tick tock.
The time for NHL teams to make trades is slowly winding down, as Friday marks the 2023 trade deadline.
It’s been a hectic few weeks in the league. The trades began back in February and the quantity has only increased as the deadline inches closer.
Deadline day may end up being a quieter day than in the past. A majority of the biggest names expected to be on the move have already been traded. Those deals include Patrick Kane and Vladimir Tarasenko to the Rangers, Ryan O’Reilly to the Maple Leafs, Jakob Chychrun to the Senators and Timo Meier to the Devils.
Here is everything you need to know ahead of the NHL’s trade deadline:
NHL TRADE DEADLINE: Full list of completed deals
When does the 2023 NHL trade deadline end?
The deadline for general managers to call trades into the league office is 3 p.m. ET on Friday, March 3.
Trades may be announced after the 3 p.m. deadline as long as they have been submitted before that time.
Can players be traded after the 3 p.m. ET deadline?
While there is a specific deadline for trades, teams can still acquire players from other clubs after March 3.
The caveat is that any player traded after the March 3 deadline is not eligible to play in any regular season or playoff games for their new teams.
If any deals are done post-deadline, it typically involves AHLers or injured players with term on their contracts.
Is the NHL trade deadline always in March?
The NHL trade deadline has typically been in late February, but it is in early March this year.
While it is a tad later than last year’s past, it is much earlier than the 2022 deadline.
Last year’s deadline was not until March 23. With the 2021-22 NHL regular season ending in late April as opposed to early to mid-April, the deadline was extended so that teams would have sufficient time to determine their deadline strategy.
