Former North Carolina big man Brad Daugherty made some history on Sunday afternoon in Daytona, Florida.
With Ricky Stenhouse Jr.’s win in the Daytona 500, Daugherty became the first Black owner to win a Daytona 500 in history. The win came under caution on Sunday night and gave Stenhouse Jr. his first-ever win at Daytona as well as his first NASCAR win.
Daugherty is part of JTG Daugherty Racing, as the group owns one car in the NASCAR series. That car and driver Stenhouse Jr. delivered in a big way on Sunday night and looks to build some momentum moving forward in this NASCAR season.
Daugherty had a standout career at North Carolina, playing four seasons with the Tar Heels and was named a two-time All-ACC first-team selection and a first-team All-American under Dean Smith.
He went on to be drafted No. 1 overall in the 1986 NBA Draft and played with the Cleveland Cavaliers before retiring in 1996.
