Helio Castroneves will jump into NASCAR Cup Series for the first time next month.
The four-time Indy 500 winner and three-time winner of the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona will attempt to qualify for the 2025 Daytona 500 in the Trackhouse Racing entry, “Project 91.”
Castroneves will have to qualify for the Daytona 500 on his qualifying time or claim a transfer spot in his qualifying race in the Daytona Duels, which are set for Thursday, Feb. 13. He is not guaranteed a starting spot in the Sunday race.
Driving the No. 91 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet, Castroneves will attempt to join Mario Andretti and AJ Foyt as the only drivers to win the Daytona 500 and the Indianapolis 500.
“Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would enter a NASCAR race and certainly not the Daytona 500 with a team like Trackhouse Racing,” Castroneves said in a Trackhouse Racing press release. “This is an opportunity that nobody in their right mind could ever turn down. … I wish the race were tomorrow.”
Castroneves will be sponsored by Wendy’s. Trackhouse Racing’s “Project 91” has brought several racers from other disciplines, including Formula 1 world champion Kimi Raikkonen and Shane van Gisbergen, to NASCAR.
Darian Grubb will serve as the crew chief for the No. 91 team in the Daytona 500.
When is Daytona 500 race?
The Daytona 500 is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. CT on Sunday, Feb. 16, 2025 at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona, Florida. This will be the 65th running of the Daytona 500, also known as the Great American Race.
