Have a Kia With a Bad Engine? Kia Might Replace It for Free

Kia has a problem with the 2.0-liter engine used in some Soul and Seltos models: some could have potential engine damage that could lead to a failure or a fire. As a result, 137,256 vehicles have been recalled.

The recall affects 2021 through 2023 models. Specifically, documents at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) mention 53,635 Seltos vehicles and 83,621 Souls, all equipped with the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. The problem stems from the piston oil rings, which suffered a “quality deviation” from the ring supplier. The exact nature of that issue isn’t described, but oil rings are designed to create a seal in the cylinder that regulates compression and oil lubrication. They attach to the pistons, so any “deviation” could lead to a number of problems.

That includes wreaking havoc on the cylinder walls of the engine. If the damage is severe, it can lead to loss of power, excessive oil consumption, and engine failure. Kia notes over 400 allegations of vehicles stalling that may be connected to the bad rings. In four cases (each involving the Kia Soul) a fire occurred due to a hole worn into the engine block. According to recall documents, there are no known reports of accidents or injuries resulting from this problem.

If piston rings are causing issues, Kia notes there should be ample warning before something happens. Oil consumption, abnormal noises from the engine, and smoke in the exhaust could occur. If oil levels get low, the oil pressure warning light should come on.

As for the remedy, Kia dealers will inspect engines on recalled vehicles for possible damage, and replace the engine if necessary. If there isn’t any sign of trouble, dealers will install a software update that can help detect possible “piston ring noise” and trigger an alert for the driver. Should that alert ever appear, Kia will replace the engine.
