Sep. 3—Indiana driver Chase Briscoe will be racing for the NASCAR Cup championship.
Briscoe needed to win at Darlington this past weekend to lock up a position in the playoffs, and he accomplished the feat — keeping Kyle Busch from winning and knocking out the former champion from another shot at the playoffs.
Briscoe is in the final year of his contract with Stewart/Haas Racing, which is suspending operations at the end of 2024.
Briscoe is moving to Joe Gibbs Racing next year.
Briscoe joined Harrison Burton as a winner in the final two races before the playoffs to earn an opportunity to battle for the championship.
Along with Busch, Bubba Wallace didn’t make the playoff field and one has to consider Kyle Larson the leading contender for another Cup championship.
Tyler Reddick and Martin Truex Jr. made the playoff field despite not recording a victory thus far in 2024.
While NASCAR was racing at Darlington, the IndyCar Series returned to the Milwaukee Mile for two events for the first time since 2015.
The Milwaukee Mile used to be a regular on the IndyCar schedule, normally the weekend after the Indy 500.
It was great to see the series return to the Milwaukee Mile, and it can only be hoped it will remain on the schedule in the future.
The Mile has a long history in motorsports, and I got the opportunity to be there for several American Speed Association races in the past.
Noblesville driver Conor Daly turned in the performance of the weekend in the first race, finishing on the podium after starting 26th in the field.
IndyCar finishes the season on the Nashville Super Speedway in two weeks with Alex Palou holding a 33-point lead over Will Power.

But the hottest driver with the series is Tyler Roahrig, with three wins in the past four races. Roahrig was knocked out of a chance to win back-to-back titles when he missed the Anderson Speedway race in July.
Anderson’s Greg VanAlst finished 28th in the Xfinity race at Darlington after starting 38th in the field.
