The Mustang GTD is an exceedingly special and wildly rare piece of machinery. We hope at least some buyers will climb behind the wheel and enjoy the car for its intended purpose. Sadly, we suspect many will look at it, drive it a handful of gentle miles, then tuck it into a climate-controlled garage until they can sell it for a tidy profit. Such owners will have to wait at least two years for such an opportunity.
It doesn’t come as a big surprise. Ford required a similar agreement with buyers of its previous limited-edition fun machine, the Ford GT. As reported by Ford Authority, GTD buyers won’t be able to do a quick flip under any circumstances. A Ford spokesperson confirmed the agreement in the following statement to Motor1.
“Ford Mustang GTD customers agree to confidential terms and conditions that include a commitment to maintain ownership for two years.”

That deal could be tough for some Mustang GTD buyers to abide by. Ford revealed that over 7,500 people applied to buy the car, and that’s just in North America. Official production numbers for the GTD were never announced, but the GTD application mentioned a run of 300 to 700 cars per year. In a best-case scenario, that’s 1,400 cars for the initial two-year run—leaving 6,100 buyers foaming at the mouth to get one.
That begs the question: how much are people willing to pay to get a Mustang GTD? Ford’s official starting price is already lofty at approximately $325,000, and that doesn’t include options like the Performance Package—a requirement if you want to do a sub-seven-minute lap at the Nurburgring. If you recall the case of John Cena’s Ford GT, he broke the two-year requirement after allegedly flipping his car for a “large profit,” according to Ford. We don’t know the consequences of breaking the GTD agreement, but if someone showed up with a million bucks to buy your $325,000 Mustang, those consequences just might be worth it.
