A lot of math has to fall into place for those outside the top 16 to make the NASCAR playoffs with anything other than victory today at Darlington Raceway’s historic Southern 500.
Bubba Wallace was fastest in Saturday qualifying, winning his first pole of the season, and leads the way to the green tonight (6 p.m., USA Network). But he’s behind nine others on the Hard Rock betting odds. They’re nine familiar and likely deserving names ahead of him, but also some surprising stars behind Bubba on the board.
Let’s take a look at the odds board.

About that Darlington odds board, Chase Elliott and Kyle Busch
How weird to see Chase Elliott outside the top-10 favorites.
Any other year, you’d say the same about Kyle Busch, but it’s been a rough one, though better the past few weeks.
As for Chase, it doesn’t seem to matter what kind of form he brings to Darlington. In 15 career starts, zero wins and more finishes outside the top 10 (eight) than inside. It’s not like this is all news to Billy Clyde, by the way. Let him tell you himself …
Weird, in a bloodlines sort of way, because his daddy Bill had five Darlington wins and for the bulk of his prime basically received his mail in the Darlington top five.
Kyle has one win in 25 Darlington starts and just one top 10 in his past six starts on the egg-shaped Lady in Black. But if playoff desperation equals horsepower, he’s not the worst bet out there at +2000. I also don’t hate Joey Logano at +2500.
As for the longer of the longshots, no one really makes you do a double-take. Though you could talk me into spending, oh, five bucks tops, on either of the two drivers resting there at +5000.
