CAMBRIDGE TWP. — For the second-straight season the FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway will wrap up on Monday as the race is set to resume at 11 a.m.
The start of the race was delayed nearly two-and-a-half hours due to rain and got going under the hot sun a bright-blue skies, but the blue skies gave way to the heavy rain, which was too much to dry out the track in time to finish the 49 laps needed to become official by 8:20 p.m.
Every driver was able to get in 51 laps with only one caution slowing things down as pole-sitter Denny Hamlin spun out around Turn 4 on Lap 38, but was able to recover and stay on the lead lap.
When the race picks back up, it will be Chase Elliott out in front followed by Martin Truex Jr., Bubba Wallace, Alex Bowman, Tyler Reddick, Kyle Busch, Kyle Larson, Ross Chastain, Chase Briscoe and Joey Logano in the top-10.
Elliott took the lead when Stage 1 winner Ryan Blaney and others pitted on Lap 49. Blaney got his lead on Lap 43 when then leader Wallace pitted following Hamlin’s caution.
Wallace took the lead on Lap 36 as he passed both Larson and Hamlin low as the two were side-by-side.
This is the fourth year in a row where the NASCAR Cup Series at Michigan International Speedway has been either postponed or delayed. The 2023 was moved to Monday while the 2022 race had an hour delay and the 2021 had a weather caution involved.
One of the two races in 2019 was moved to Monday and one of the races in 2018 was shortened due to rain.
