Shane van Gisbergen’s dominance at the Chicago Street Race in the NASCAR Cup Series ended early in the rain on Sunday on the streets of downtown Chicago.
van Gisbergen was clipped by a spinning Chase Briscoe on Lap 25, the first green flag lap of Stage 2, slapping the wall with the right side. The No. 16 Kaulig Racing Chevrolet had major damage to the suspension, and van Gisbergen stopped shortly after slamming into the wall to end his day.
SVG won Stage 1 under caution, but restarted on the third row to open Stage 2 after a slower pit stop as the surface got soaked by rain.

van Gisbergen, the 2023 Chicago Street Race winner, will be credited with a 40th-place finish as the first car out of the race.
“Of course I’m disappointed,” van Gisbergen said to NBC after the wreck. “…. It’s a shame we couldn’t have a proper crack at it at the end.”
The race was red-flagged during the caution period after the Briscoe-SVG wreck to clean up some standing water around the course.
