According to Sport Bild, Bayer Leverkusen are on the search for a new goalkeeper, and Manchester City’s Stefan Ortega is on their radar.
It is understood that Die Werkself are on the hunt to replace club captain Lukas Hradecky, whose deal at the BayArena is set to expire in 2026.
As stated in the report, it is unexpected that the 34-year-old will receive a new contract at the club as they look to find an heir to his throne.
Internally, there had been hopes that 24-year-old Matěj Kovář would begin to succeed Hradecky this season, but he has been unable to outperform the Finnish international, despite making a number of noteworthy mistakes himself.
Therefore, the German champions have identified Manchester City’s Stefan Ortega as a possible successor, as he could step in goal ahead of next season and supply the club with a higher level of quality.
Nevertheless, as recently reported, Leverkusen are also looking to lure Jonas Urbig to the club this summer, and they could offer the promising youngster the chance to shine as the club’s number one.
As of yet, it is unclear as to what path Die Werkself will pick, but should anything change, neither Hradecky nor Kovář will be starting for the club next season.
