Carlisle United have made their second signing of the week by bringing in midfielder Callum Whelan from Gateshead.
The 26-year-old has signed a two-and-a-half year deal with League Two’s bottom side and joins for an undisclosed fee.
His arrival follows that of Elliot Embleton after the former Sunderland player moved from Blackpool on Thursday.
Whelan played under Carlisle manager Mike Williamson at Gateshead, scoring 13 times from midfield over the past two seasons.
Williamson said: “Cal is someone we have been after for a while.
“He brings energy, hunger and a high level of technical ability. He will fit straight in and improve us instantly.”
A 3-2 defeat at Crewe on New Year’s Day left Carlisle in 92nd place in the Football League, four points from safety.
They play Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park on Saturday.
