Former Barcelona centre-back Gerard Pique and former Real Madrid captain Iker Casillas argued over the ‘Negreira case’ during the seventh edition of the Chup Chup Kings.
Barcelona reportedly paid 1.4 million euros to Enriquez Negreira, vice-president of the Technical Committee of Referees, while he was still a member of the committee.
“I’ll tell you one thing: if we let the cat out of the bag, we look at UEFA and the Champions League and there Real Madrid’s [name] comes up…. all over the place,” Pique said in his bid to back the Blaugrana.
Yet, Pique‘s remarks did not please Casillas, who recalled the controversial game between Barcelona and Chelsea.
“What you guys have to do is to be quiet,” Casillas added.
“That was one of the biggest robberies people have ever seen in football.”
Neither of the two men lost their temper, but it resulted in a heated exchange of words between the former teammates.
Pique recalled that Barcelona missed out on a LaLiga Santander title due to a disallowed goal against Atletico Madrid that according to him was “not illegal and we would have won a league”.
From that moment on, each of the two men recalled matches, finals, competitions in which they consider that mistakes were made in favor of their eternal rivals.
In the end, however, Pique pointed out that, historically speaking, referees have always tended to favor the big teams, including Real Madrid and Barcelona.
