Alejandro Grimaldo, a former Barcelona youth player who currently plays for Bayer Leverkusen, has expressed a strong desire to return to Barcelona, according to recent reports from El Nacional.
Grimaldo, who was once part of Barcelona’s youth system and captained their reserve team, has reportedly expressed that he would welcome the opportunity to rejoin his former club.
In recent years, Barcelona have become a sought-after destination for high-calibre players, with many players showing interest in joining the team, drawn by its ambitious project and the promise of winning major titles.
Grimaldo is impressed
As for the full-back, during his time at Barcelona’s youth setup, he was regarded as one of the brightest talents in the club’s academy. However, despite his promise, he never had the chance to make an appearance for Barcelona’s senior team.
This led to his decision to leave for Benfica, where he found success and developed into one of the best left-backs in Europe. Grimaldo’s time at Benfica saw him grow into a top-level defender, and he continued to build on this success after moving to Bayer Leverkusen.
In his first season with the German club, he played a pivotal role in their triumphs, helping them win the Bundesliga and the DFB Pokal, with the team only suffering one defeat, which came in the Europa League final.
Comeback unlikely
Despite Grimaldo’s impressive performances and his desire to return to Barcelona, a move back seems unlikely at this point.
Barcelona already have a solid option in Alejandro Balde, who has firmly established himself as the starting left-back and then there is Gerard Martin. The club’s management do not see a need to bring in another player for that position.
Additionally, Grimaldo has made it known that he intends to leave Bayer Leverkusen in 2025. With his contract nearing its end, he is expected to explore other opportunities in European football.
His next move will likely see him join a club that values his vast experience and quality on the pitch. For now, however, the door to Barcelona appears to be closed for the talented full-back.
