Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola did not hold back when he was asked about Chelsea’s transfer spending and recalled the events that followed a UEFA sanction in 2020.
In the 2019/2020 season eight Premier League clubs, including Chelsea, sent a letter to prevent the ‘Citizens’ from appealing the sanction that UEFA had imposed on them for ignoring the Financial Fair Play.
“I know what would happen,” Guardiola responded.
“What I said, being the last fifth or sixth in the Premier League being net spending, we won 11 trophies, four Premier Leagues in five years.
“What Chelsea have done is none of my business.”
It comes after Chelsea added the likes of Enzo Fernandez, Joao Felix and Mykhailo Mudryk to their squad in January.
“We know what we are working with,” Guardiola continued.
“What Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, [Manchester] United, without good players you have to spend.
“Now the market is…wow. What they do is not my business.
“There are regulations, I don’t forget, eight or nine teams sent a letter for us to be banned.”
Letter sent to the Premier League
On February 14, 2020, UEFA informed Manchester City that it was sanctioned with two years without playing in Europe and a fine of 30 million euros for not complying with Financial Fair Play.
The ‘Citizens’ appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to appeal the sanction and eight Premier League clubs (Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United, Wolverhampton, Leicester, Tottenham, Arsenal and Burnley) sent a joint request to the CAS not to hear City’s appeal.
Each individual club contacted a law firm to submit its complaint to CAS, thought it was ignored by the CAS.
