Erling Haaland‘s contract with Manchester City is not the only source of income for the Norway international. The Premier League’s top scorer earns 40 million euros per season after moving from Borussia Dortmund last summer.
To that figure we should add his lucrative sponsorship deals. As reported by The Athletic, Haaland is close to signing a deal with Nike that would see him earn 23 million euros per year.
Haaland‘s last contract with Nike ended on December 31, 2021. Since then, he has yet to reach an agreement with any company, often wearing Nike, Adidas or even Puma boots in his games.
For example, back on June 13, 2022, Haaland wore Puma’s Ultra 1.3 City model during his presentation at Manchester City.
Days earlier, he had worn Nike boots in some Nations League games with Norway, but he was also seen wearing the Adidas X Speedportal.
After many months wearing the Nike Zoom Mercurial Vapor 15 in his Premier League matches, rumors have been put to bed.
Here’s how the football boot market works
It is common in football that players take some time to choose which brand will dress them. During this period, players wear black boots or alternate between different brands.
These agreements, of course, go far beyond the boots worn by the player in matches. They extend to sportswear or streetwear.
“Normally when the contract is about to end, or is already finished, players usually wear all-black boots to let the brands know they are free [to negotiate]. Some also paint the boots with drawings or colors to cover up the logo,” Il Miga, an expert in the world of football boots, tells MARCA.
“Haaland has never worn black boots. He has simply worn the ones he wanted to keep wearing or what he wanted to try”.
As The Athletic explains, for the Manchester City striker, the comfort and satisfaction he feels with his current Mercurial boots has been fundamental to his decision.
