Newcastle United are through to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup thanks to a 1-0 victory over Manchester City on Wednesday night.
Eddie Howe‘s men navigated a slow start before showing signs of life before the break. Once play resumed, Alexander Isak netted the lone goal to help last season’s finalists move on while handing Pep Guardiola‘s side their first defeat in 90 minutes of the season.
Manchester City started strongly but had to wait until the 18th minute for a chance. Youngster Oscar Bobb picked out Julian Alvarez, the Argentine’s strike from a tight angle forcing Nick Pope into a save with his outstretched right foot.
Alvarez lashed another chance across goal as the away side began to impose their will, while Newcastle struggled to put together any sort of sustained possession.
Newcastle had to wait until the close of the half to get into City’s box for the first time, and when they did, it should have been 1-0. Isak found Jacob Murphy, and after taking a couple of touches, he tried to slot his effort into the far bottom corner, only for Stefan Ortega to deny him with his feet.
The home side carried that momentum over to the second half and took the lead in the 53rd minute. Joelinton burst into the box and squared the ball for Isak, who fired home at the back post.
City’s first shot on target of the second half didn’t come until the 75 minute mark, Jack Grealish cutting in and firing an effort that Pope easily dealt with.
With City stepping up the pressure in the closing minutes, Anthony Gordon almost wrapped up proceedings for Newcastle, however his shot from a tight angle was straight at Ortega.
Soon after substitute Jeremy Doku found Rico Lewis, but the 18-year-old could only drag his shot just wide from 25 yards out in what proved to be City’s last chance of the evening.
