Former Olympique Lyonnais midfielder and France international Maxime Gonalons (35) has announced his immediate retirement from football.
The midfielder, who made his debut for Les Bleus back in 2011 and went on to earn eight caps, came through the ranks at Lyon, before going on to captain the club. He went on to make 334 appearances for Les Gones, scoring 13 goals and registering 12 assists in the process.
He moved to AS Roma back in 2017 before also going on to play for Sevilla and Granada in La Liga. He returned to France in 2022, joining Ligue 1 side Clermont Foot. In his first season with Les Auvergnats, he helped keep the side in France’s top-flight, however, he couldn’t repeat the feat in his second season.
Clermont’s relegation back to Ligue 2 at the end of last season coincided with the expiry of Gonalons’ contract. Without a club ever since, he has now announced his retirement.
