Manchester City have once again been linked with a January move for Atalanta midfielder Ederson. Reports from Jack Gaughan and Martin Blackburn for the Daily Mail and The Sun respectively, name the Brazilian midfielder as a potential January target for the world champions. Ederson is a fine player but convincing Atalanta to sell one of their most important players could be a tough task for Manchester City.
As a player, Ederson would add what Pep Guardiola’s side currently lacks in midfield. The best attributes of his game appear to address City’s biggest needs in midfield. He is energetic and strong in a challenge and reads the game exceptionally well. Ederson is also good on the ball and has a wide range of passing. The Brazilian is a versatile midfielder who can play as a number 6 or an 8 in midfield. There is also the possibility of the Brazilian one day forming a formidable midfield partnership with Rodri if he did sign for City this month. As a player, Ederson ticks a lot of boxes that Manchester City require from a midfielder. But if he is the player City have identified to bolster their midfield the challenge is to convince Atalanta to sell one of their most important players mid-season.
That will be no easy task. Atalanta currently sits top of the Serie A table. They are also chasing their first league title in the club’s history. Ederson is one of their most important players and has been pivotal to their strong 24/25 season to date. All of this would make it appear difficult for Manchester City to convince Atalanta to sell the Brazilian this month. It’s not impossible but it’s not a straight forward task.
Ederson could be the perfect player to strengthen Manchester City’s midfield. There are shades of Manchester City legend Fernandinho in his game. So on paper you’d imagine he’d slot into Pep Guardiola’s midfield with ease. That doesn’t appear to the the issue at hand. It will be a tough sell to convince Atalanta to sell the Brazilian. That’s the challenge that the Manchester City hierachy face if Ederson is the player they’ve set their sights on. You’d imagine City would pull out all the stops to sign Atalanta’s midfield workhorse if he is their main midfield target. But only time will tell if that will be enough to convince Atalanta to sell their asset this month.
