Austria and Poland face off at Euro 2024 looking to boost their Group D hopes after opening-round defeats.
Ralf Rangnick’s side pushed France close in Dusseldorf, suffering a 1-0 defeat in a scrappy contest after Kylian Mbappe’s broken nose.
While Poland were undone late by Wout Weghorst and the Netherlands, despite grabbing the lead through Adam Buksa. Robert Lewandowski could return for Poland, with coach Michal Probierz maintaining “there is a big difference if you have best player in the world on the bench or you have him on the pitch.”
Austria captain Marcel Sabitzer is embracing the pressure from what he has defined as a must-win game: “If we follow our principles and are intense, and if we bring all that on the pitch, then we have a good chance of winning tomorrow.”

Wout Weghorst finds perfect timing to reprise his role as Netherlands’ tournament super sub
16:25 , Chris Wilson
A reminder of how Poland’s first game went.
It may be of scant consolation to Poland but the World Cup winners have suffered the same fate. A Netherlands manager, seeking a goal and a game-changing substitute, summoned Wout Weghorst. And, like a force of nature, he felt unstoppable. It wasn’t quite enough to eliminate Argentina in the World Cup quarter-final but, when Poland were closing in on a point in Euro 2024, Weghorst went from the bench to the scoresheet in two minutes.
The forward who delivered a mere two goals in 31 appearances for Manchester United may have found his niche: as the Dutch super-sub in tournament football. As he was mobbed by teammates and substitutes alike, his name echoed around the Volksparkstadion, the hordes in orange celebrating their ungainly saviour.

Attention now turns to the second game of the day, and we move to Group D as Poland face Austria in Berlin.
Austria’s opening Euro 2024 fixture has become more notable for the injury to Kylian Mbappe than for the largely impressive performance Austria themselves showed, but they’ll need to do it all again and find a result this time when they face Poland.
The second round of games brings added pressure for those who failed to find victory first time out, as opportunities to reach the last 16 quickly feel as though they’re about to run out – though at least Ralf Rangnick’s side have the consolation of knowing their defeat was to Group D’s top seeds in France.
Poland were beaten by Netherlands and though it was a narrow scoreline in the end, a more clinical Oranje in the first half could have seen the Poles heavily swept aside.
This meeting between the two carries added weight given the knowledge that a single win could be enough to sneak through in third place; lose here though and it’s surely all over for Poland at least.
The same Mykhailo Mudryk, but different? Chelsea man adapts to inspire Ukraine
16:10 , Sonia Twigg
Mykhailo Mudryk sprung off the turf, rising through the drizzle to meet the ball with the badge on his jersey, before guiding it deftly to the grass below. Then, he turned, driving forward into the ever-widening channel in front of him. Slovakia’s goal grew bigger and bigger before him, as he drew closer and closer. But it would never be sizeable enough to contain his shot. It was an ugly finish in all honesty, slashed high, wide and hopeless.
It was a moment to sum up his brief Euro 2024 campaign up to that point, but more than that, it was an extension of a dispiriting first 18 months at Chelsea. The Ukrainian has been praised by fans of the club for his application, an admirable quality, but so far he has provided lots of endeavour and very little product for the Blues.
And on Friday, clad from neck to ankle in yellow rather than blue, this was a different Mudryk, yet the same Mudryk.

Shaparenko fired in a leveller before Yaremchuk hit the winner with a very clever piece of play.
Ukraine fought hard to hold on to victory and keep their hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages alive.

Kucka takes, but it’s hit well over the bar, he has completely miss-hit that, it goes into the top tier of the stand.
Slovakia 1-2 Ukraine
15:41 , Sonia Twigg
82 minutes: The more replays you watch of that goal, the better it looks! To take a ball over the shoulder is difficult, let alone to take the pace off it and slot it into the back of the net.
Yaremchuk has done exactly what was hoped of him when he came on in the 67th minute for Dovbyk.
GOAL! Yaremchuk puts his side ahead – Slovakia 1-2 Ukraine
15:39 , Sonia Twigg
79 minutes: GOAL! Yaremchuk has timed his run perfectly, and takes a touch to kill the pace on it and then just touches the ball past the goalkeeper where the defender cannot keep it out of the net.

66 minutes: Slovakia try and get forward but they are pegged back into their own half, and any chance is scuppered with an offside.

Remember, this is all a bit of fun as we go from worst kit all the way to best.

The biggest team news is probably Ukraine goalkeeper Andriy Lunin being dropped for Anatoliy Trubin.

Radu Dragusin, Romania’s defensive pillar at Euro 2024 – who Tottenham fans haven’t seen yet
13:23 , Jack Rathborn
Unbeaten in qualifying, perhaps there shouldn’t be quite so much surprise over Romania’s thumping victory over Ukraine.
The Tricolorii scored both well-worked and thunderously-hit strikes, claimed a 3-0 win in Group E and got themselves off to a magnificent start at Euro 2024, already a huge step towards the knockouts taken – something they’ve not managed since Euro 2000.
And yet for all the explosive nature of both goals and celebrations, Romania’s biggest strength in qualifying was one they showed again here in less obvious terms: their defensive resolve and organisation.
Edward Iordanescu’s side conceded just five times in ten matches during qualifying, and while none were against the absolute elite of European football, it’s still a record to be proud of and a base to build from.

Romania were far too good but Ukraine have already won at Euro 2024
13:15 , Sonia Twigg
Perhaps the occasion got the better of them but, given what Ukraine have been through in the past two years and beyond, maybe there was nothing left to give.
Even before their European Championship opener had got under way, Ukraine had already won, qualifying for a fourth successive Euros two years after Russia sent missiles in Kyiv’s direction.
Such an achievement cannot be overlooked. With their support hindered by the realities of war, after completing a qualification campaign entirely on the road, a vibrant Romania proved just a step too far, one goal in particular worthy of the grandest of stages.
The knockout stages were always a distant dream, having put so much into qualifying via the play-offs, but there was always hope. Romania, it seems, are going to take some stopping, led by their larger-than-life manager Edward Iordanescu.

Euro 2024 Group E guide
12:55 , Sonia Twigg
Belgium head into the European Championship with one goal in mind; win the trophy. After shockingly being dumped out of the 2022 World Cup in the group stages manager Roberto Martinez was let go and replaced with German-Italian coach Domenico Tedesco who is tasked with restoring some pride to the Belgians. Euro 2024 is perhaps the last chance for aging legends like Kevin De Bruyne, Romelu Lukaku and Axel Witsel to win international silverware and they will hope to take advantage of a seemingly friendly group to build momentum for the tournament.
Alongside them in Group E are Slovakia who have qualified for a third consecutive Euros finals. They have famously won this title before, as part of Czechoslovakia in 1976, but since the countries split in 2016 their best performance saw them reach the last-16 which will be their aim again this year.

Romelu Lukaku’s luckless run continues as Slovakia claim first shock of Euro 2024
12:40 , Sonia Twigg
Slovakia produced the first major shock of Euro 2024 with a 1-0 win over Belgium in Group E after Romelu Lukaku endured a day to forget.
Lukaku squandered a number of chances in Frankfurt and when he did find the net, on two occasions in the second half, both were ruled out for infringements.
It continued the Belgium top scorer’s luckless run of form at major tournaments after he missed several chances in their group-stage exit against Croatia at the 2022 World Cup.
It meant a fine seventh-minute strike by Ivan Schranz was enough to settle the group encounter and earn Slovakia, ranked 48th in the world, one of the best victories in their history.
Statistically, it was the biggest upset the competition has seen at the finals stage, with the team ranked a lowly 48th getting the better of the world’s No 3 team.

Predicted line-ups
12:20 , Sonia Twigg
Slovakia: Dubravka; Pekarik, Vavro, Skriniar, Hancko; Kucka, Lobotka, Duda; Schranz, Bozenik, Haraslin.
Ukraine: Lunin; Konoplia, Zabarnyi, Matviyenko, Zinchenko; Stepaneko, Shaparenko; Tsygankov, Sudakov, Mudryk; Dovbyk.
Early team news
12:00 , Sonia Twigg
Ukraine have no fresh injury concerns after the loss to Romania. The nature of their performance means that changes are to be expected as they look to grab a much-needed win, though you can expect Artem Dovbyk, Mykhailo Mudryk and Oleksandr Zinchenko to retain their places.
Sudakov and Tsygankov could well make way for Yarmolenko, Yaremchuk or Malinovskyi if Ukraine look for attacking changes. Lunin should start in goal despite a poor performance in the opener, while Everton left-back Vitaly Mykolenko – who was ruled out of the first game through injury – could make a return to the side, allowing Zinchenko to move to midfield, where he often plays for his national side.
Though Ondrej Duda limped off with cramp in the win against Belgium he should be fit to face Ukraine, and there are no other known injury concerns at this point. Francesco Calzona will likely choose the same starting eleven that earned the famous victory in Frankfurt, with the impressive Haraslin, Bozenik and Schranz leading the attack.

A jubilant Slovakia side meet a (so far) underachieving Ukraine team in the second round of fixtures in Group E, with Francesco Calzona’s side looking to gain another crucial three points in their bid to make the last 16.
Slovakia sprung the first real shock of Euro 2024 after beating a much-fancied Belgium side 1-0 in their opening game, with Ivan Schranz the hero after a mistake from Man City’s Jeremy Doku.
Ukraine opened their campaign against Romania earlier on the same day, with another surprise in the group as Romania beat their eastern European neighbours 3-0 thanks to goals from Stanciu, Marin and Dragus.
The result leaves Ukraine – who boast the likes of Oleksandr Zinchenko, Mykhailo Mudryk and LaLiga top scorer Artem Dovbyk in their ranks – at the bottom of Group E, likely needing at least a draw to keep their hopes of qualification alive.
Why Ralf Rangnick’s Austria should still be your dark horses at Euro 2024
11:18 , Jack Rathborn
The Godfather of Gegenpressing, of all people, was made an offer he surely couldn’t refuse. And yet somehow, some way, he did.
As the European Championship approached, so did Bayern Munich, but Ralf Rangnick held firm. It is a quirk of Rangnick’s career, that Germany’s most influential coach has never worked with the nation’s preeminent football club. Instead, the highest-profile periods of the 65-year-old’s career have been spells at Schalke, Leipzig, Stuttgart, Hoffenheim, Hannover, and – more recently – Manchester United.
During his time as interim coach of United, the German accepted the Austria job and reneged on his decision to remain at the Premier League club in an advisory capacity. His arrival in England had stirred excitement in football purists, or nerds, yet his time there did not bring the desired results.
