The United States men’s national team kicks off a key CONCACAF Nations League semifinal against rivals Mexico on Thursday night at Las Vegas‘ Allegiant Stadium. But rumors continue to persist over the future of the team’s head coach position, currently occupied by interim appointmentBJ Callaghan.
According to ESPN, US Soccer has been in contact with Patrick Vieira, the former New York City FC boss and a Premier League icon who is said to be interested in taking the reins as Gregg Berhalter‘s permanent replacement on the touchline.
A Premier League winner with experience in three countries
Vieira‘s legendary career as a player win 10 trophies as a midfielder at Arsenal, where he played between 1996 and 2005. Vieira ended his career as an FA Cup winner at Manchester City, and he later went to work for City Football Group as NYCFC’s manager.
Vieira joined French side Nice in 2018 after guiding New York City to a third consecutive top-three finish in Major League Soccer‘s Eastern Conference. After his departure in December 2020, the Frenchman took over at Crystal Palace, guiding the Premier League side to the FA Cup semifinals in 2022 before his sacking this past March.
Vieira one of several candidates
US Soccer is moving slowly in finding a replacement for Berhalter, with two interim coaches appointed since the 49-year-old stepped down following the 2022 World Cup.
Vieira is competing for the USMNT job with Jesse Marsch, who has long been considered a Berhalter successor. Marsch has been linked to the Celtic and Monaco jobs in recent weeks, but he is likely to simply wait out the federation’s vetting process.
As for Berhalter, he has been linked in recent days with the Club America job, but he is reportedly holding out hope of being reappointed as USMNT boss despite leaving the post in December.
