Wrexham AFC, the Welsh club owned by actors Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, are in position to return to the English Football League after a 15-year absence.
A 3-0 home victory on Tuesday over Yeovil Town means Wrexham are one win away from promotion to the fourth tier of the English soccer pyramid as Vanarama National League champions.
Wrexham have experienced a stratospheric rise since Reynolds and McElhenney purchased it in 2020, gaining popularity and admirers with the airing of the “Welcome to Wrexham” television series on American channel FX.
What is Ryan Reynolds planning next?
Reynolds, the star of blockbuster films such as “Deadpool,” “Green Lantern,” and “Free Guy,” has reportedly purchased a 1.5 million home in the Welsh village Marford as he deepens his connection to the club. Marford is located roughly five miles north of Wrexham’s stadium, the Racecourse Ground.
Wrexham goalkeeper Ben Foster has said Reynolds and McElhenney are readying a “monster” party to recognize the team’s achievements once promotion to League Two — the fourth tier of English soccer — is secured.
“If we get promoted, they’re gonna take us away somewhere with a lot of flashing lights,” Foster recently told CBS Sports.
Another convincing victory
Wrexham’s latest win Tuesday brought their season point total to 107, which is a record for a professional English team. Wrexham are four points clear of second-place Notts County with two games remaining for both teams.
Irishman Anthony Forde opened the scoring on the hour with a deflected shot. Twelve minutes later, James Jones stuck a rebound into the bottom corner of the Yeovil goal, and Paul Mullin‘s 77th-minute header closed the scoring.
Wrexham’s next match is home to Boreham Wood on Saturday, April 22.
