Two more Spanish Super Cup finals between the two Spanish football giants have taken place since, with Real Madrid winning both in 2012 and 2017, with both of these being two-legged ties.
They also met in the new four-team format last year, when Los Blancos won 3-2 after extra time.
Below comes a look at all the times the rivals have met in finals, with Real Madrid holding a 6-1 record in these contests, that traditionally took place at the beginning of each new season.
1988: The first Real Madrid win
The first Spanish Super Cup Clasico took place in 1988. Michel and Hugo Sanchez scored one each as Real Madrid won 2-0 at the Estadio Bernabeu. Barcelona were victorious in the second leg (2-1) at the Camp Nou, but they were beaten on aggregate.
1990: Real Madrid’s ‘Manita’
Los Blancos won the title again, this time grabbing a 5-1 victory on aggregate. After winning 1-0 at the Camp Nou, Real Madrid recorded a 4-1 win on home soil to lift the trophy.
1993: Three out of three
Real Madrid managed a 3-1 victory at the Bernabeu and won the trophy after holding on to a 1-1 draw in the return leg at the Camp Nou.
1997: Real Madrid dominate yet again
This time, Barcelona grabbed 2-1 victory at the Camp Nou, but Real Madrid cruised past their opponents with a 4-1 win in the return leg.
2011: Barcelona’s first triumph
The first leg in the Spanish capital ended in a 2-2, with Barcelona coming out victorious from the second game between the two sides. Their 3-2 victory was marked by a brawl that saw Jose Mourinho poke Tito Vilanova in the eye.
2012: Mourinho’s revenge
This time the title was decided on away goals, as Barcelona won 3-2 in Catalonia, but Real Madrid managed a 2-1 victory to lift the trophy at home.
2017: Asensio’s goals
Marco Asensio found the back of the net in both legs, with Los Blancos winning 3-1 at the Camp Nou and 2-0 on home soil.
