Manchester United earned a draw away from home against Real Sociedad in the Europa League last-16.
Joshua Zirkzee’s fine second-half finish was cancelled out by Mikel Oyarzabal’s penalty after Bruno Fernandes was judged to have handled the ball in the area from a corner kick.
The match finished 1-1 and sets up a thrilling second leg to be played at Old Trafford next week.
Rasmus Hojlund and Alejandro Garnacho were struggling for confidence ahead of the game but both played well despite not being clinical enough in the final third.
After the game Zirkzee said he wants United to be more ‘ruthless’ when converting the chances and opportunities they make. Can they do so in the second leg?

Man Utd show promise but familiar flaws leave Ruben Amorim a headache
Thursday 6 March 2025 20:22 , Mike Jones
Ordinarily, a draw away from home in first leg of a European knockout round is one to be celebrated, putting any team in the driving seat to progress.
Manchester United’s home discomforts under Ruben Amorim, however, will make Old Trafford a jittery place come next Thursday, after a 1-1 first-leg draw in the Europa League last 16 was secured at Real Sociedad.
As often with this misfiring fallen giant, things could, and perhaps should, have been so much better in the Basque Country. Their crucial European adventure remains alive, but with plenty still to do to edge one step closer to that pivotal return to Champions League football next term.

Bruno Fernandes says silverware remains misfiring Manchester United’s focus as attention turns to the Europa League following the FA Cup holders’ disappointing exit to Fulham.
Last May’s Wembley win against Manchester City ended a poor season on a high for Erik ten Hag, whose successor Ruben Amorim oversaw a disappointing fifth-round exit at Old Trafford on Sunday.
United skipper Fernandes took the game to extra time by brilliantly cancelling out Calvin Bassey’s header, with it ending 1-1 after 120 minutes before Fulham won 4-3 on spot-kicks courtesy of two Bernd Leno saves.

Among those at Old Trafford on Sunday was a manager sacked after his side hit rock bottom. No, not Ruben Amorim.
Plymouth’s past and present were watching Manchester United, Miron Muslic the day after his side acquitted themselves well at Manchester City, Wayne Rooney pontificating on his old club.
Sacked with Argyle bottom of the Championship and possessing the worst defensive record in the country, a man who once said he wanted to manage Everton or United may be an expert on the gap between ambition and reality.

Real Sociedad vs Man Utd
Thursday 6 March 2025 15:25 , Mike Jones
Manchester United face Real Sociedad in the Europa League round of 16 this evening, with the visitors desperate to stay in a competition that represents their last chance of a trophy this season.
Ruben Amorim’s side travel to San Sebastian having been dumped out of the FA Cup on penalties last weekend, and this competition is now their only chance to salvage anything from a terrible season.
And they face a Real Sociedad side who have had their own domestic struggles of late, with the Basque club sitting ninth in La Liga.
Nevertheless, it is illustrative of United’s poor form that they head into the tie as underdogs, despite the Spanish side losing three of their last five in the league.
