Renowned professional golfers Rickie Fowler, Justin Thomas, and Jordan Spieth have expressed their interest in becoming part owners of Leeds United.
This announcement comes shortly after Leeds United was acquired by 49ers Enterprises, the investment arm of the San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers Enterprises had previously owned 44% of the club and recently finalized an agreement to purchase the remaining 56% stake from current owner Andrea Radrizzai, as reported by ESPN.
In an interview with Sky Sports ahead of the U.S. Open, Rickie Fowler revealed his intention to explore investor opportunities alongside his close friends, Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth. When asked about their potential ownership status with Leeds United, Fowler stated, “There is a group that is moving forward with being involved with Leeds. So yeah, myself, JT, and Jordan – potentially, we will be a part of it.
Fowler expressed his enthusiasm for the prospect of joining the ownership group, acknowledging the unique opportunities that such involvement presents.
It’s cool to have those opportunities. I know we’re looking into it, and yeah, it would be fun if we get to be a part of it. If not, we will continue to root for Leeds to see if we can help out Billy [Foster].
It is worth noting that Billy Foster, the caddie for professional golfer Matt Fitzpatrick, is an avid supporter of Leeds United. Fowler highlighted the cultural significance of football (known as soccer in the United States) and the passion it evokes among fans. “Obviously, they got relegated, but to get to go to a Premier League game, a Champions League game, any of that. It’s called football over there, we call it soccer here, but it’s a massive sport,” Fowler remarked.
Leeds United recently were relegated from the Premier League after a dreadful season, finishing second from the bottom of the table. They will play next season in the second division of English football, The Championship. Fowler expressed his belief in the growing popularity of football in the United States and the potential for its continued expansion. “I feel like it is continuing to get bigger in the states,” he explained. “I think-since I haven’t been to a game, I don’t have the true appreciation until actually being able to go and feel that energy.”
Should this investment materialize, it would mark an interesting crossover between the worlds of golf and football, further solidifying the global appeal of both sports. As developments unfold, the golfing community will eagerly await news of their potential venture into the world of football ownership.
