Ryan Reynolds‘ Wrexham AFC will take on Premier League giants Chelsea in a preseason friendly match set to take place in Chapel Hill, North Carolina this summer. The match is scheduled for July 19th and will be played at the University of North Carolina’s Kenan Stadium.
Owned by Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, Wrexham will face Chelsea for the first time on neutral soil. The friendly is expected to be an exciting event and an important part of Wrexham’s preparations for the upcoming 2023-24 season.
Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson expressed his enthusiasm for the match, stating that it will be a terrific test for his players. He also added that the club is looking forward to meeting its passionate fans who have supported them from afar this season at the renowned Kenan Stadium.
Chelsea’s President of Business, Tom Glick, also spoke about the upcoming match, stating that they are delighted to return to North Carolina as part of their U.S. tour this summer. Glick added that the club’s strong U.S. fanbase supports them incredibly all year round, and they are looking forward to meeting them in Chapel Hill.

This friendly match is part of Wrexham’s tour of the United States, which will also include a match against Manchester United in San Diego on July 25th.
Wrexham has had a successful campaign this season and is only one victory away from securing automatic promotion to the English National League for the first time since 2008. Meanwhile, Chelsea has had a disappointing season, with both Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter being sacked.
The team was knocked out of the Champions League by holders Real Madrid on Tuesday and will end their first campaign under the ownership of the Todd Boehly-led Clearlake Capital consortium without a trophy.
